William L. Harkness directed his crew to continue on without a local guide through the Schreiber channel, as he believed the fees were too high. Gunilda ended up running aground hard on McGarvey shoal. Some blame his arrogance and others believe there were errors in US charts he entrusted to navigate the Canadian waters. Ultimately, Harkness' decision to not heed the advice of the captain from the tug boat James Whalen requesting an additional tug to better stabilize Gunilda, an additional cost he once again believed to be too high, would be a mistake. Gunilda listed and filled with water while being pulled from the shoal and rapidly sank to the bottom. The final cost was the luxurious pride of the New York Yacht Club-Gunilda! Join our trimix divers under 270' of dark, cold, Lake Superior on a tour of the shipwreck Jacques Cousteau labeled "the World's finest shipwreck".
